AUSTIN, TX - Supreme Billboards, an Austin-based political action committee, launched a petition today urging 37 members of the United States Senate to act in accordance with the principles they espoused in 2016 regarding election-year Supreme Court nominations and immediately halt the confirmation process for Amy Coney Barrett.
The senators targeted by the petition are those who, in 2016, made known their conviction that voters should have a voice in deciding who is nominated to the Supreme Court when a vacancy opens during an election year, but who are currently supporting the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett.
The petition letter, to be delivered to Mitch McConnell and 36 other senators, reads:
We, the undersigned, urge you to act in accordance with your stated principles and halt the Supreme Court confirmation process. Many of you referenced the state of division and chaos that existed in our country in 2016 as a reason to delay the nomination of Merrick Garland. We ask you to look around and acknowledge that that division and chaos has reached unthinkable levels.
Rushing the consideration of a Supreme Court Justice is wildly irresponsible, especially at a time as uncertain and chaotic as 2020. Remember the principles you told us you held so dear in 2016. Remember that we are watching. Remember that in four weeks, we will hold you to account.
